The Rise of the Low & No Alcohol Drink

The Rise of the Low & No Alcohol Drink

It’s no secret that low and non-alcoholic beverages have been skyrocketing in popularity over the past few years.

Back in 2021, Waitrose conducted a study that revealed that searches for these drinks were continually rising by 22 per cent each year. This is a trend that shows no signs of slowing down.

The result has been an explosion of consumer choice, with almost every major brand offering alternative zero-alcohol options. Bars across the country are also keeping well stocked, with plenty of options in Servaclean venues as well.

Why are low-alcohol drinks becoming more popular?

There is a myriad of reasons why low and no alcoholic drinks are rising in popularity.

As mentioned, the increase in options and quality of the product is a key factor. Gone are the days of one or two zero-alcohol beers that taste nothing like their boozy counterparts. Instead, we are spoiled for choice.

Health-conscious consumers are another driving factor. In the post-pandemic era more people are taking note of their health and cutting down on alcohol can be a vital factor.

Some no-alcohol benefits include:

  • Better sleep – Alcohol negatively affects ‘REM’ sleep, which is the stage of deep slumber
  • Alcohol can impair your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to illness
  • Zero-alcohol drinks typically contain fewer calories and sugar

Another factor is that teens are not drinking as much as previous generations. Since the mid-2000s there has been a steady decrease among the 16-25 age range.

The Society of Independent Brewers’ British Craft Beer Report in 2020 revealed that almost one in four young people have become teetotal.

What are the requirements for a Low Alcohol drink?

If you’re on the lookout for low-alcoholic drinks, you will be scanning for the ABV (alcohol by volume) number.

It must be 1.2 per cent ABV or below to be considered a low-alcohol drink. As for being considered alcohol-free, the drink can be no more than 0.5 ABV.

As long as the drink is below that threshold, you’ll be okay to take a sip.

What types of Low Alcohol drinks are there?

Almost all types of alcoholic beverages have low-alcohol alternatives now.

Whether you’re a fan of beer, gin, wine or liqueurs, there’s something for everyone.

The most surprising is the variety of spirit alternatives now, with non-alcoholic tequila even being an option.
